Keeping Connected Devices Online: A Planning Checklist

Make the list

You cannot look after devices you have not written down. Start with a simple inventory. A spreadsheet is enough.

  • Device type and purpose

  • Location, including the specific room or area

  • How it connects

  • Who owns it inside your business

  • Who supports it if it fails

Rank what matters

Not every device is equally important. Mark the ones that would stop work, affect safety, or lose important data if they went offline. Plan those first.

Check the connection itself

  • Test coverage where the device actually sits, not just nearby.

  • Find out what happens during a power cut.

  • Decide what the device should do when it loses connection.

  • Keep business devices separate from guest Wi-Fi.

Plan for the quiet failure

  • Decide how you will know a device has stopped reporting.

  • Name the person who gets notified.

  • Write down the first three things to check.

Review it regularly

Devices get added, moved, and forgotten. A short review each quarter keeps the list honest and stops old equipment from staying connected long after anyone needs it.
